Glen Affric Plodder Falls and River Affic and the River River Glass June 2013

Our last day in the Highlands of Scotland

The first 6 photos were taken at the Plodder Falls in Glen Affric one of the most beautiful Glens in the Highlands. The drive to the falls is very dusty, also a long steep walk down to the main falls, so all my photos are from the top.

On the other side of the Glen the last 5 were taken of The River Glass, further up river it is called The River Affric both can be reached from the village of Cannich which is on the A831.

The village of Beauly is some 12 to 15 miles from Inverness and the nearest village to where we stayed, each Thursday evening in the square the local Beauly Highland Dancers along with the Beauly Pipes and Drums Band give an evening of  excellent entertainment, along with the fantastic hospitality of the local people. This is a free evening, however if visiting please make donation to help support this wonderful event.

Priory Church Beauly Scotland June 2013

The ruins of Priory Church can be found in the village of Beauly 12 miles outside Inverness. The ruins of the Priory Church are so peaceful to walk round and the varying colours of the stones walls are amazing like a patch worked quilt. This was the place to relax and enjoy a few hours of tranquility.

John O' Groats and Dunnet Head

John O' Groats was the first port of call today, we drove straight to the area due to the distance and the fact I wanted to visit Dunnet Head the most northerly point of the UK mainland. A lot of people think it's John O' Groats, however that is not true it certainly is Dunnet Head.

The first 8 photos are at John O' Groats and the last 3 Dunnet Head this as indeed a memorable and extreamly long day.

Rosemarkie across from Fort George near Inverness Scotland

You get to Rosemackie from the A9 then take the A832 at Rosemackie look for Marine Terrace, there was not to much to photograph and to many people waiting for the dolphins to arrive in Rosemackie Bay sad to say none turned up, so the lone seagull and the kayaks on the shore took my interest then one took to the water which gave me my last photograph.

Invermoriston and Views of the River Moriston A82 Scotland

Invermoriston is on the main road (A82) just a short distance inland from Loch Ness where it meets the A887. The River Moriston  caught my eye as we drove over the bridge shown in the photos. Parking the car and walking a short distance down the path shown in the first photo, is where I decided all the photos would be taken. The photos looking up river through a stone window were the window is part of an old stone building built out over the river. It's a shame you're unable to hear the water flowing over the rocks.

Glen Finnan and Loch Shiel Scottish Highlands

Glen Finnan and Loch Shiel can be seen by driving along the A830 from Fort William to Mallaig

The photos are around the area where Prince Edward Stuart AKA      (Bonnie Prince Charlie') landed from a small boat on the banks of Loch Shiel in 1745 on the 19th August. So the final Jacobite raising was started. The Finnan Viaduct is in Glen Finnan where the River Finnan runs into the Loch Shiel.

The Statue of the lone Highlander wearing a Kilt is the memorial to that final Jacobite Raising. It was erected about 1815 three years after the road from Arisaig to Fort William joining the two places.

There are 11 photos in all, but due to difficulty walking close views of the Finnan Viaduct not possible, but enjoy looking all the same.
